The Vedic teaching, as expressed by Maharishi and Guru Dev, is that our souls have all evolved through countless incarnations up through the animal kingdom. For example, Maharishi once quipped, "The reason the world is in such a mess is because we keep eating our future leaders" (referring to the killing of cows, who are thought to eventually incarnate as Brahmins).
